BIOGRAPHY
Calvin, a graduate of Stellenbosch University in South Africa, made his London début after private studies with a professor at the Royal College of Music as Nerone in Monteverdi’s “L’Incoronazione di Poppea” in Jan 2006 with Il Corpo Cantante. Calvin’s repertoire includes the stratospheric part of the lascivious castrato Liscione in D Scarlatti’s scandalous intermezzo “La Dirindina”, the title role in A Scarlatti's “Marco Attilio Regolo” and Medarse in Hasse’s “Siroe” (ensemble serse), Handel’s Sesto (“Giulio Cesare”), Ruggiero (“Alcina”) and The Sorceress in Purcell’s “Dido & Aeneas”. Calvin’s singing studies have gone hand in hand with his academic research into the distinctions between the different castrati used by 18th century composers. Calvin’s future plans include Arbace in Hasse's "Artaserse" (ensemble eerse), Handel’s “Ariodante” and recitals at venues like Handel House Museum (London) and The Centre for the Performing Arts in Cape Town, South Africa. Calvin continues his vocal studies with Raymond Connell.
